Absolute determination of number densities of atomic hydrogen in plasmas using two-photon polarization spectroscopy

Objective

A pure hydrogen plasma at a pressure of 100 millibar has been established to be a high precision standard of number densities of atomic hydrogen. In order to make this new measurement technique available, independent of the primary standard, it was necessary to establish an easy to handle transfer standard.
Xenon has a sufficiently high nonresonant 2-photon absorption cross section and could serve as a simple rare gas transfer standard. To establish this standard the ratio of the nonresonant 2-photon absorption cross section of Xenon, at the resonance frequency of the 1S-2S transition of hydrogen, with respect to the well known 2-photon absorption cross section of the 1S-2S transition of hydrogen was measured. The easy to handle Xenon gas now serves as a high precision transfer standard for measuring number densities of atomic hydrogen, number densities of other atoms within the precision of their 2-photon absorption cross sections of other atoms in general.
A new measurement technique has been established using 2-photon polarization spectroscopy and this technique has several advantages compared to other methods especially for the determination of atomic densities in plasmas and gases at high temperatures.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
