Objective
To demonstrate the possibility to extend the use of visual approach indicator systems in secondary airports. To demonstrate, that a pv powered runway border lights system can reduce investment cost.
The pv systems supplies power to three different loads :
1) The PAPI system :
A PAPI system is a visual path indicator used in airports to provide the pilot of an approaching aircraft with the necessary informations for safe landing. It consists of four units placed in a line; each unit has three lamps at 200 W so the total load is 2400 W. Estimated consumption: 16 kWh per day.
The PAPI systems can also operate with a power supply by an (already existing) Diesel generator. (In fact two independent power sources are requested by the regulations.)
2) Runway lights :
The runway is equipped with 70 border lights of 36 W (white, blue, red and green, depending on their position). All lights can be switched on and off in four intensity steps from the tower. Estimated consumption: 5 kWh per day. 3) Parking area :
The power supply can also be used for lighting the aircraft parking space. 200 W sodium lamps. Estimated consumption: 5 kWh per day. Analytical monitoring (by PC and memory cards) is foreseen.
