Objective
To demonstrate a sizing method for hybrid PV - Diesel systems and assess its cost effectiveness. The size of the pv part of the hybride system can be 50% of that of a pure pv system. A hybrid system has between 25 to 30% lower investment costs than a pure pv system.
To show, that the system with automatic Diesel starting and without any pv charge controller is reliable and that standard, once per year maintenance is possible.
To verify the benefits of a remote control system with telephone and minitel connection.
After some minor modifications no power interruption occurred during years of reliable operation. Some problems were encountered with the data logger system.
Investment and maintenance cost are as they were projected: the technical and economic success of the project has hence been demonstrated.
The average annual pv power production is 3800 kWh. Energy cost is reported to be 2.0 Ecu/kWh (same for a replication), to be compared to 1.5 Ecu/kWh for a grid extension at that specific site and to 1.6 Ecu/kWh for pure Diesel generation.
The site of this hybrid pV-Diesel system is on the Gros Bessillon mountain (813 m), about 50 km north of Toulon. It is the power supply for a Telecom relais station with a constant consumption of 700 W (at 48 V).
The 3.78 kWp pv generator is composed of 72 PHOTOWATT modules of type PWP 402 and of 20 PHOTOWATT modules BPX47451, mounted on standard racks with 50' inclination. Appropriate lightning protection is provided. The array is coupled without any charge regulator to an OLDHAM battery, 48 V, (24 cells TNS 22 2530) with a capacity of 3630 Ah (C100); 174 kWh.
The Diesel engine has a 350 l local fuel tank and a 3500 l fuel reservoir (for two years of operation) with automatic fuel transfer. It drives an 8 kVA monophase generator, followed by a rectifier, both being standard FRANCE TELECOM equipment.
The Diesel starts automatically when the battery voltage is below 48.5 V (at 25 deg. C), which corresponds to about 50% of the discharge capacity and it stops when the battery has rached 57 V (90% charge) or in any case after 10 hours of Diesel operation.
In case of failures the battery is capable of providing 3 days power after an alarm is sounded, which should allow adequate time for a maintenance crew to reach the site.
A newly developed tele control system transmits all operational data via the telephone and MInitel system to the remote control station. It also transmits all sorts of alarms.
During the monitoring period the data for the analytical monitoring were also transmitted by this control system. Data are available (with interruptions) for about 20 months from Oct. 1988 to December 1990.
