Objective
Demonstration of reliability and cost effectiveness of the energy supply of a control station of a broadcasting company located in a remote region, not connected to the grid.
A TV control station is situated on the top of the Pratomagno mountain, 1593 m high, 35 km from Florence. The site belongs to a natural reserve. It is not accessible in winter (snow for 4 months) and in summer only after four hours of drive on bad roads. The installation is radio controlled from a central station.
The present electricity supply by a Diesel generator is to be replaced by the PV system of 14 kWp size, which is big enough to fully supply the installation even in December. In the other months the generated pv power is higher than the load requirements. The existing Diesel is to be used only as back-up power source.
Nr. of subsystems : 1
Power of subsystems : 14 kWp
Total power : 14 kWp
Backup : Diesel
Number of modules : 264
Module description : Ansaldo, type AP 50 HD, monocrystalline, 50 Wp, 1298 x 343 x 41 mm.
Connection : 4 in series, 70 strings parallel
Support: On racks, in front of the building, wind resistance to 160 km/h
57 deg. inclination from horizontal (to maximize power in winter and to avoid snow cover).
Max power tracker : none
Charge controller : special design by SEI (solid state unit, microprocessor controlled)
Battery : Lead acid, CGA, Italy
Batt. (V) : 48
Capacity (Ah) : 1250
Inverter : none
Load description : Constant 2.2 kW (at 48 V) for telecom control station. (19170 kWh per year)
Monitoring : By independently pv-powered unit UA2.
Hourly averages of 8 data are recorded, and can be stored in a memory with 1 year capacity. Teletransmittance of the data is possible.
