PASSIVE THERMO-PV HYBRID SYSTEM FOR ISOLATED BUILDINGS

Objective

Design, build and monitor a hybrid thermo-photovoltaic passive solar system for isolated, not grid connected rural or residential houses, combining the know-how of the BARRA passive system for heating and ventilation and the ITALSOLAR polycristalline photovoltaic technology for electricity generation.
(Newly developed combined solar collector for heat and electricity production).
The good behaviour of the BARRA thermal system was confirmed. The efficiency of the PV system was around 8%. For a replication an energy cost of 1.2 ECU/kWh has been evaluated.
The black, anodized aluminium absorbers (louvers) in the BARRA thermal collectors were replaced by pv modules of special design. The generated electricity can be used to increase the efficiency of the (air) thermal collector by driving a ventilator; the pv modules become cheaper as the protection fron the environment and the structure are supplied by the thermal collector.
The special pv modules use polycristalline silicon wafers 5 x 10 cm mounted on anodized aluminium (1.5 mm thick), slightly flexible, incapsulated with EVA and under a TEDLAR cover foil.
24 squaremeters of the building, exposed towards south, were covered with the combined thermal collector/pv-modules. 20 kW thermal power (air temperature increase fron 18 to 40 degrees) and 3,3 kW electric power were obtained including a 33 squaremeter PV traditional system built in front of the house.
Nr. of subsystems : 2

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
