INSTALLATION OF SOLAR EQUIPMENT AT THE LOUVAIN-LA-NEUVE UNIVERSITY SWIMMING POOL

Objetivo

The Louvain-la-Neuve indoor swimming pool's solar installation should contribute both to the heating of the covered indoor pool's water and the production of hot water for the showers. The principal interest of the Louvain-la-Neuve project resides in the fact that swimming pool water solar heating installation will alllow comparison with a purely classical system as the building contains identical pools only one of which receive solar.
Glazed flat plate collectors 200 m2 for shower water
150 m2 for swimming pool
Total 350 m2
Pool surface 600 m2
Solar surface / pool surface 0.25 (150/600)
Expected gained solar energy 476 kwh/m2 a
Boiler for shower water 10 000 l
Hot water stocked per m2 collector 50 l/m2.
The performance of the solar collectors was intensively monitored during August 1984. The hot water circuit showed a solar collecting efficiency of 38% the solar circuit of the pool heating 41%. In August 1984 the overall gas consumption was only 16% of the gas consumption in 1983.
After one year (1st October 84 - 30th September 85)
- energy saving: swimming pool: 429 kWh/m2 solar collector = 64 350 KWh/y
hot water: 207 kWh/m2 solar collector = 41 400 KWh/y
- gas consumption: 138,500 m3
solar system efficiency 56%
solar fraction pool 42%
average gas consumption for 81-82-83: 189,250 m3
energy saving: 50,750 m3 (760,000 FB) or 507 000 KWh/y which is 5 times
higher than the pure solar input. The saving could be due to improved
controlling stategy or a very low furnace efficiency in summer (20%)
So if the same performance are maintained during the following years, it gives an actual simple payback of 10 years.
The indoor swimming pool is on the new campus of the Universite Catholique de Louvain. It is mostly used by students. Two separate solar circuits are installed, one for the heating of shower water, the other to heat one of two identical indoor pools. The original project has an additional heat exchanger, solar circuit to hall ventilation, in order to prevent an overheating of the pool. In case of an overheating, which is unlikely, the second pool can be heated alternately. The solar circuit to heat the pool water is closed and linked to the filter circuit by a flat plate heat-exchanger. It functions parallel to the auxiliary heat exchanger. It is possible to heat one of the pool with solar energy exclusively e.g.during the summer half term and compare its temperature level and auxiliary heating demand.
The solar hot water circuit involves three circuits: first the solar filled with glycol, second an intermediate circuit closed in itself to the heat exchanger of the hot water boiler. This double link is necessary by law in the Benelux-Countries, Obviously it lowers the overall efficiency of the solar system.
