Performance of reference methods and validation on commonly used methods in E.U. for the enumeration of E. coli and enterococci in bathing waters

Objective

The project intends to make available standard protocols for: - Reference methods for the enumeration of E. coli and enterococci that can be used for the determination of the microbiological quality of bathing waters (fresh and sea).
- The determination of the performance characteristics of these reference methods, using artificially and naturally contaminated bathing waters. - The validation of some commonly used official methods in comparison with reference methods, in diverse situations as encountered in the E.U. To reach these general objectives we propose the following steps: - Development of reference methods, reference materials and standard protocols for the evaluation and the validation of microbiological analytical methods. - Training ca 20 participants with the reference methods and the reference materials, and validation of the standard protocols ' through sessions in a central laboratory.
- Implementation of the standard protocols in a number of laboratories of the E.U. in order to determine the reproducibility of the reference methods and to test some commonly used official methods in the field conditions in comparison with the reference methods in various bathing waters representing, as far as possible, all different bathing water typologies in E.U. This objective will be reached through interlaboratory studies.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
