Preparation and certification of a sewage sludge from waste water treatment plants for measurements of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins -pcdds, polychl orodibenzofurans - pcdfs

Objective

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs) are attracting a lot of concern among people because of their environmental persistence, their tendency to bioaccumulate through the food chain and their toxicity. As sewage sludges which are contaminated by PCDD/F are used as fertilizers in agriculture, horticulture or forestry it is recommended to regulate their addition to soils.

In some European countries application of sewage sludges to agricultural land is now limited for the amounts of heavy metals and it is likely that their addition will also be restricted on the basis of their PCDD/F content. The objective of the project is the certification of a sewage sludge sample which will then be useful to analytical laboratories involved in PCDD/F analysis in that type of matrix.
A candidate sewage sludge has been selected and initial contaminant analyses have been performed in order to evaluate the concentration of organic and inorganic contaminants. The preparation of the sludge for bottling is now under way and it is expected that homogeneity and stability control will start within two months.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
