Objective
Lower limb orthoses are external devices which provide support or stabilisation for dysfunctional lower limbs.- Their design and construction has a direct effect on patient mobility and quality of life. The structural demands placed upon such devices can be severe, and design represents a real challenge. New developments are required but these are inhibited by the limited funding available within the predominantly SME's which serve the clinical centres offering orthoses within Europe. The lack of available data on the required performance characteristics of these devices have restricted the development of new designs. Manufacturers are most commonly SMEs and are, therefore, unable to meet the economic challenge of evolving new orthoses, particularly in an environment where legislation is placing increased responsibilities on them to ensure the safety of the devices they supply to patients. This research project addresses that issue by establishing a number of RTD goals which include:
(i) To understand, fully, the mechanical performance required of lower limb orthoses.
(ii) To define numerically the performance characteristics of lower limb orthoses.
(iii) To provide engineers with operational loads to assist with device design.
(iv)To produce a best practice document which provides the baseline performance data for manufacture of orthotic devices. The output from this pre-competitive project will be a best practice guide (BPG) and eventually a European Standard which can be used by the orthotic manufacturing industry.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
