Control of defects in TIG welds by use of a top face sensor system

Objective

A wide ranging survey of SMEs showed a need to reduce fabrication flaws associated with welds. An in-process sensing technique would significantly help fabricators control their welding process and reduce weld flaws. At present sensors that monitor the weld from the same side as the weld torch, known as top face sensors, do not meet industry requirements as they cannot compensate for all variations that lead to defective welds. This project will develop a top face sensor capable of controlling TIG welding conditions to produce acceptable welds in materials of between 1 mm and 3mm thickness. An effective system would be attractive to industry as it is more practicable and economic than sensing from the back of the weld. An innovative approach of combining two complementary sensing techniques will compensate for all the variations of material and joint condition. Welding control and sensing technology coupled with modelling and empirical assessement will be used to develop and evaluate a prototype system capable of working in industrial environments.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
