Objective
The aim of this project is to develop and implement pressure mapping techniques to the surface of a shoe last and to provide a means of interpreting the results of the measurements to enable the manufacturing operative to achieve faste process set up times and to improve overail quality in the lasting and bottoming areas this is where the shoe upper i5 pulled around the last to give its three-dimensional shape and where the sole is attached to the lasted upper. The footwear industry needs an improved means of monitoring and controlling the lasting and bottoming operations. This can be achieved by measuring quantitatively the pressure distribution between the upper and the last surface during the various shoemaking operations and providing the operative with the means of using the resulting measurements. The main benefits will be improved qualiy of product with fewer factory rejects and customer returns, together with faster and more accurate process set-up. Currently, shoemakers are not able to carry out quantitative force and pressure measurements during the lasting and bottoming processes. Machine set-up is normally by trial and error judging the results by eye. The techniques descried in this proposal will provide a major advance in the set up and control of critical quality related processes.
