Objective
The scientific and technical objective is to provide an industrially acceptable classification standard for carbon-based coatings for use in European Industry by utilizing a statistically robust assessment methodology. Research is required to correlate the physical and chemical quantifiable properties of these materials to their measured mechanical responses, and to assess the variability inherent in specific coating and process types. The work will also provide for the development of a novel impact tester and multiple-pass scratch tester to assess the mechanical response of the new coating classes. The tests will be both repeatable and reproducible.
