Objective
Adhesion between coating and substrate as well as cohesion within the coating are frequently the limiting factors of thermally sprayed coatings. Therefore well-defined testing methods for general quality control and optimization of the properties of thermally sprayed coatings are of great importance. So far this problem has not yet been solved satisfactorily. The pull-offtest standardized in EN 582 is mainly used to measure the adhesion between substrate and coating in addition to a visual evaluation of cross sections by light microscopy. This standardised test can hardly be applied by SMEs due to the rather costly equipment. Therefore a new test method shall be developed that requires much less effort in producing samples as well as preparing and carrying out the test. Out of the great number of possible test arrangement the shear test method has been selected. This type of testing seems to be best suited to meet the requirements. The aim of the cooperative RTD project is twofold: Firstly a highly reliable testing arrangement will be developed that is affordable for SMEs. Secondly recommendations for the standardization of the test method will be evaluated regarding in particular the specimen geometry. The test results will be compared with those obtained by the pull-off-test and other testing methods.
