Development of high precision isotope ratio measurement methods using multi-collector ICP-MS

Objectif

Objetive of the Project.
The objective of the project is to develop analytical procedures, using isotope ratio methods, which may be applied to a number of important industrial and research areas of activity. These procedures are intended to enhance the competitiveness of European Industry, and provide a new tool for European Research Institutions. The areas which will potentially benefit from the results of the project will be:
1. Mineral and oil exploration and resource management.
2. Handling of materials involved in the Nuclear Power and Reprocessing industries.
3. Environmental monitoring activities.
4. Nutritional Sciences.
Proposal Content.
In order to achieve this objective, the following work programs will be carried out.
a)Design and construction of a new generation ICP-MS instrument incorporatinga thermalisation hexapole collision cell, laminated magnet (for stable but rapid scanning) and an extended multiple collector system.
b)Design of a new excimer laser ablation system and associated stage which will be coupled to the new instrument.
c)Distribution of the prototype instrument to selected partners who will develop the experimental methods required for the exploitation of the novel instrumentation . A number of specific activities have been identified which are felt to be important areas of development which should produce results which are of immediate use in the designated areas.
d) Development of the software necessary to automate the methods developed in(c).
e)Development of sample handling methods, especially those relating to laserablation of solids so that direct isotope ratio and composition measurements can be made on the same instrument.
f)Continue the development of the ICP- vacuum interface based on collision-celltechnology to further enhance the performance of the instrument with respectto overall detection efficiency and reduction of molecular interferences.
Control of the project will be by means of a steering committee who will critically compare the results obtained against the targets set out in the proposal, and information generated will be made available to all partners through the production of reports which will be the responsibility of the individual partners.
