COMPLETING THE EUROPEAN INTERNAL MARKET : THE CONSEQUENCES O F "1992" FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADES

Objective


A number of thorough academic analyses of the implications of the completion of the European single market for external trade have been produced.

Areas covered have included:
development of a general equilibrium model of European Community (EC) market integration;
study of global production effects of European integration;
integration of financial services and economic welfare;
market integration, competition and welfare;
case study of the pharmaceuticals industry;
case study of the European footwear trade;
theoretical aspects of market integration, the long run value of inflexibility;
macroeconomic import functions with imperfect competition;
bilateral trade elasticities for exploring the effects of the European single market.
THE PROGRAMME BRINGS TOGETHER UNDER THE AEGIS OF CEPR RESEARCHERS FROM SIX EUROPEAN COUNTRIES TO UNDERTAKE A SET OF LINKED PROJECTS DESIGNED TO ELUCIDATE THE EFFECTS OF COMPLETING THE EUROPEAN INTERNAL MARKET ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE FLOWS AND POLICY.
THE PROGRAMME WILL EXPLOIT A VARIETY OF APPROACHES TO MODELLING INTERNATIONAL TRADE.SEVERAL PROJECTS ASSESS THE TRADE AND WELFARE IMPLICATIONS OF REPLACING CURRENT NATIONAL TRADE POLICIES IN PARTICULAR SECTORS BY COMMUNITY POLICY.FOUR PROJECTS DEAL WITH THE GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM CONSEQUENCES OF COMPLETING THE INTERNAL MARKET.THESE OFFER METHODOLOGICAL AS WELL AS SUBSTANTIVE INSIGHTS.TWO PROJECTS MODEL THE EFFECTS OF 1992 ON THIRD COUNTRIES TRADE,GROUNDING THEIR CONCLUSIONS IN DATA AND ESTIMATION RATHER THAN IN SIMULATION.OTHER PROJECTS LOOK AT THE ROLE OF RECIPROCITY IN TRADE NEGOCIATIONS,NOTABLY THE URUGUAY ROUND ,AND AT THE POSSIBLE ROLE OF THE NORDIC COUNTRIES IN THE FORMATION OF EC POLICY POSITIONS IF THEY WERE TO ACCEDE TO THE COMMUNITY.THE PROPOSALS REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION AMONG THE RESEARCHERS :JOINT WORSHOPS,DATABASES AND DATA PROCESSING,RESEARCH ASSISTANT EXCHANGES,DISSEMINATION AND SO ON
