Objective
THIS PROJECT WILL MODEL EC-NIC TRADE IN MANUFACTURES BY ESTIMATING EXPORT DEMAND AND SUPPLY SYSTEMS FOR BOTH SETS OF COUNTRIES.THE RESULTS WILL CAST LIGHT ON THE PROSPECTS FOR MANUFACTURED EXPORTS IN BOTH GROUPS,AND,AT A MACROECONOMIC LEVEL,THE PROSPECTS FOR EXPORT-LED GROWTH.IT WILL ALSO HAVE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE QUESTION OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER BETWEEN THE EC AND THE NIC'S.UNTIL RECENTLY,ANALYSIS OF EXPORTS FROM LESS DEVELOPED COUNTRIES HAS FOCUSED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY ON THE DEMAND SIDE.WE SHALL INCORPORATE SUPPLY SIDE FACTORS,AND TO FACILITATE THIS,OUR EXPORT FUNCTIONS WILL BE DISAGGREGATED BY EXPORTING COUNTRY.THERE WILL ALSO BE QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF SUPPLY FACTORS PARTICULAR TO INDIVIDUAL NIC'S.THE EXPORT FUNCTIONS WILL THEN BE USED,WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF AN EXISTING GLOBAL ECONOMETRIC MODEL,TO ASSESS THE IMPLICATIONS OF VARIOUS POLICY SCENARIOS FOR EC-NIC TRADE IN MANUFACTURES.THE PROJECT COMBINES EXPERTISE IN MACRO-ECONOMETRIC MODELLING IN GLASGOW AND IN THE ANALYSIS OF EXPORT PERFORMANCE IN EUROPE AND NIC'S IN PARMA AND MILAN.
