Objective
Conclusions from the study of the extensional flow behaviour of polymer solutions are as follows:
solution preparation techniques are critical;
increasing polymer coil dimensions causes increases in shear and extensional viscosity;
no simple relationship exists between shear and extensional flow in general;
the measurement technique employed for extensional flow measurement strongly influences the data obtained;
new techniques of measurement are now available which greatly enhance the accuracy of the extensional flow data;
polymer association can be induced in shear and in extensional flow, the former leading to time dependent effects and the latter to phase changes in extreme cases;
the above effects strongly influence fluid filament break up mechanisms.
