Objective
The objective of this project is to undertake a series of measurement campaigns using radar, lidar and radiosonde techniques in order to study the processes involved in stratosphere troposphere exchange processes in mid-latitudes.
The measurements will be exploited and interpreted in association with other relevant analyses and a 3-dimensional model. Studies of tropical exchange and comparisons with a 2-dimensional model may be carried out, but will be assigned a lower priority than the mid-latitude data analysis.
Instruments to be used are e.g. MST radars, lidars, radiosondes. Modelling studies will be undertaken using a 2-dimensional photochemical model, a full 3-dimensional general circulation model and a highly developed trajectory model.
The results of this project can be expected to be a vital element in calculating the medium and long-term effects on stratospheric ozone and climate of chemical releases into the troposphere.
