CHLOROPHYLL FLUORESCENCE AS A POSSIBLE TOOL FOR LOW-COST AND CONTINUOUS BIO-MONITORING OF PESTICIDES IN AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS

Objective

The objective is to develop low cost techniques which allow continuous and sensitive monitoring of a wide range of pesticides in all aquatic ecosystems.

It is intended to develop the physiological and conceptional basis for a biosensor system which allows detection of low level changes in pesticide concentrations in natural habitats. In order to use the in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence as a test parameter for environmental control, the different parameters which contribute to steady state fluorescence level must be clearly defined.

The programme includes the effect of preillumination, light intensity and light quality on the fluorescence levels in 4 different algal species, 2 fresh water and 2 marine. The inhibition constants of 4 selected herbicides are determined for all the fluorescence parameters. The methodology used is pulse amplitude modulated fluorescence of intact algal cells under different light conditions with the following pesticides: diuron, simazine, atrazine and metazine.

After a screening phase, a candidate system is chosen according to the criteria of sensitivity, reproducibility and stability of culture maintenance.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
