Optimization of biological processes and treatment for the conversion of nitrogen aqueous pollutions

Objective

The main objectives of the research are to study: the reactional aspects, on cultures fixed on immersed fine granular medium and/or in free cultures, of the steps of nitrification (nitritation, nitratation) and of denitrification (denitritation, denitratation) in order to control the nitrates; and the steps, using fixed or free cultures, of the integrated nitrification and denitrification or nitratation and denitratation integrated processes on different effluents (urban and agroindustry residual wastes waters) in order to optimize them.

The research work is divided in 2 main parts as follows.
The kinetic approach: control of different conditions (physical, biological and chemical) of the reactions in order to control the shunt of the nitrates, in discontinuous reactors (lab scale) and on selected microflora and in continuously fed reactors of filter type immersed in natural and/or thermoplastic granular media (clay, pouzzolane).
The process approach: to be performed on urban waste water and agroindustry and livestock waste waters with processes integrated in classical treatment schemes. 2 types of processes will be studied: free cultures of activated sludge type or fixed cultures (percolation or granular immersed beds). The assimilable carbon will be first identified in each effluent, then laboratory pilots fed with real effluents will be used.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
