DEVELOPMENT OF A DEEP WATER DRILLING UNIT

Objective

Aim of the project is the design of a drilling vessel for severe environment and deep water.
The design of the DSS-1000 has been completed and documented in drawings, reports and specifications. Patents have been applied for a specific system on board. The 5 column principle stands as a feasible and valuable feature for deep water drilling. The design package is at sufficient level to enable immediate start of a building project if and when conditions permit.
The design will be valuable for drilling in deep, rough water such as north-west of the U.K. or in Norwegian waters. It may serve as well as a base case for different applications, e.g. floating production offshore. No immediate follow up is expected in view of the relatively low level of the crude oil price, which makes exploration of harsh areas presently unattractive.
The basic objective is to design a vessel which combines the advantages of a drill-ship and a semi-submersible. This resulted in the DSS-10.000. This is a dynamic positioned column stabilized vessel, characterized by the two floaters, four stability columns, one large central column with an enclosed moonpool and a box-type upper hull.

Overall length : 109,5 m
Overall width : 64 m
Operating draft : 26,3 m
Operating displacement : 65,000 tons
Accommodation : 114 persons
Variable deckload : 4,700 mtons
Total variable deckload: 10,000 mtons
Drilling depth : 25,000 ft
Water depth :10,000 ft

The center column will be used for the storage of the entire marine riser and creates the space for an enclosed moonpool and a BOP assembling and testing area. Riser joints (85 ft. length) are stored vertically in carousels. Patents have been applied for.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
