DEVELOPMENT PROJECT OF A NOVEL OFFSHORE PRODUCTION SYSTEM

Objective

To develop the concept of a tethered buoyant platform for the production of hydrocarbons from offshore reservoirs in water depths of 150 to 600 m.
Feasibility was established. Computer programs for platform dynamics and riser behaviour were developed and validated by tank model tests. Both tubular and cable tethers were acceptable.
The results are being used to indicate potential production systems for prospective licence areas and have formed the basis for further work for larger tbps. The present world oil situation does not favour further large expenditure on the work without a specific application.
The project was proposed as a development programme in 4 phases: phases 1 and 2 involved preliminary development to confirm essential feasibility, optimisation of keys items. Phase 3 would extend detail engineering of the key components for a potential application and phase 4 would commence manufacturing and testing of the critical new items of equipment and materials.
Norwegian companies took part in the activities as subcontractors.
