Objectif This project aimed at the design, construction and testing prototype compact gas-oil and water-oil separators following the completion of the early development work funded under eec contract 04008-76.A licence to market and sell both systems was granted to a uk manufacturer. So far, 3 compact water-oil units for de-oiling produced water have been sold for north sea duty.A 60,000 barrel-day compact gas-oil separator based on the use of a cyclone was installed in kuwait. Extensive tests of the unit showed that target separation efficiency, 5% volume of gas in the separated oil with no oil carry-over in the gas, was attained with the addition of anti-foaming agent. The prototype water-oil separator, 12 000 barrels-day, was installed in qatar. Tests of the separator, which is based on the use of coalescing cartridges protected by a backflushing prefilter, showed that the unit attained the target of less than 0.1 % water in oil and less than 15 ppm oil in water. Both the gas-oil separators met the plan area (less than 25 % conventional system area) and weight (less than 30 % conventional system weight) targets set.
