Objective
To develop and test an electric motor driven modular pumping unit, with a maintenance-free life of at least two years at depths of 3,000 m in deep oil wells with a deviation of up to 6 deg. C./30 m., at oil temperatures of up to 120 deg. C. and pressures of 210-350 kg/cm2 even when the motor is full of sour crude oil.
The dynamic thermal and vibration responses of the shaft-bearing system in the test apparatus have been established with "soft" bearing surfaces. Results so far confirm that bearing temperature rises and shaft dynamic responses are satisfactory. Stator core ceramic coating for corrosion protection has been demonstrated to be effective in sea water over the above temperature and pressure range. The main technical problem encountered during the project was concerning the development of a suitable encapsulation resin. Several resin samples have been tested. After extensive tests, particularly with crude oil/gas mixture at a temperature of 200 deg.C and pressure of about 4000 psi, a suitable material was selected.
But those tests took considerably larger time than anticipated. In addition to use the selected material in downhole prototype requires long term testing of this important component. Considering increased project expenses and further delay required for solving technical problems it has been decided to interupt the project after phase I completion.
Phase 1.
Determination of mechanical and electrical properties of materials, development of pressure-temperature cycling equipment for well-bottom simulation tests: design and manufacture of pressure balance unit: development of winding encapsulation and core corrosion protection systems: investigation of bearing coating to resist abrasive and chemical effects of sour crude oil containing sand: measurement of dynamic thermal and vibration response of full scale simulated shaft-bearing system: design, manufacture and test of prototype motor to establish dynamic characteristics at full load.
Phase 2.
Manufacture of second prototype motor emboying the solutions from phase 1: life test of motor-pump unit, supplied by static converter equipment, and pumping brine solution contaminated with sharp sand.
Phase 3: manufacture of a module for testing in a north sea production well, to be provided by amoco. Life-testing in the well environment.
