EXTRA-DEVELOPMENT OF EXPERT SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY FOR RISER ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Objective

The objective of the EXTRA project is the synthesis of expert systems technology and advanced riser analysis and design techniques into an integrated marketable software package.
A major innovation is the possibility of accumulating engineering knowledge and company procedures into a productive design tool for a variety of commonly used offshore systems such as marine risers, loading towers and flexible risers.
The package acts as an expert assistant in the design of exploration and production, rigid and flexible risers and articulated loading columns and towers. A preprocessor aids the user in the definition of the model in a form suitable for the analysis routines; a program strategy controller decides the most apprppriate analysis techniques to be followed. Finally, a postprocessor performs design code checks and certification, before advising the user of the suitability of his model. Graphical output is available to the user at all stages to provide a clear, understandable representation of results.
Results include the satisfactory design of two API test case risers, namely API-500-21.5-2-R and API-1500-21.5-2-R using frequency domain and time domain analyses respectively. The 2-D flexible riser section is also operational and satisfactory results have been obtained from the design of a number of flexible riser production systems.
A problem encountered is that of costs and programming effort in interfacing between knowledge and analysis engineering systems in the software and hardware context. Present-day software tools and computers are designed for one or the other, but no integrated approach for communication between the two different streams is currently available. Accelerated use of expert systems by industry in general is generating new operating systems that may overcome this problem.
The project includes an intelligent pre-processor that assists in setting up the analysis of a riser system, refined solution techniques for steel and flexible risers and an intelligent post-processor that incorporates design checks and code certification. Using the pre-programmed expert knowledge, a user of EXTRA is guided and advised through all the modelling and analytical steps associated with the finite element analysis of riser systems. Special rules and requirements based on a particular company's experiences and background may be incorporated into the analysis and results post-processing including some report preparation. The EXTRA system is very useful for training purposes for new or re-assigned staff since it performs as an expert tutor.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
