Objective
This project concerns the implementation at PECORADE reservoir of pilot injection of CO2 to maintain the reservoir pressure above the critical pressure whilst at the same time enhancing oil recovery in a part of the reservoir difficult to exploit using conventional methods. It follows a feasibility study performed under contract TH 05.29/81.
The technical phase of the project (production, liquefaction, transport and injection of CO2) took place satisfactorily, except for a failure of the CO2 injection pumps, which resulted in a lengthy interruption of injection from 18th october 1983 to 6th february 1984.
The very poor petrophysical characteristics of the reservoir have required a high injection pressure in the range of 420 bars at the welhead (PCE 13), to maintain an injection of an acceptable level (60 tons per days). These pressure conditions have resulted in fracturation inside the reservoir at the injection well, whereas initially injection was to take place at pore communication level.
The result of this fracturation has been very quick breakthrough of the CO2 into the production wells, so that the surrounding matrix was only affected little by the injection.
The CO2 is extracted from lacq gas, liquefied and stored at - 20 deg.C and at pressure of 20 bars. It contains less than 1,000 ppm of H2S and is then carried by tank trucks to the injection site 65 kilometres away, where it is again stored into 175 m3 containers. Injection takes place in liquid form at an average daily rate of 60 tons of CO2 for 420 bars at the injection wellhead (pce 13).
The conditions in the three production wells (PCE 04, PCE 22 and PCE 23) about 200 metres away from the injection wells, are followed by gauges and weekly samples of effluents, so as to be able to follow the action of the CO2 in the reservoir.
