PROMETHEE [PHASE 1]

Objective

This project consists in developing laboratory tools capable of representing the exact reservoir conditions during air injection; e. g. the gas flows, temperature conditions, pressure conditions, consolidated porous medium, etc. These tools will make it possible to obtain results easily extrapolable to a reservoir scale, or study of air injection in unexplored domains such as light oil reservoirs.
In phase I, experiments have been carried out on two reference oils (specific gravity 0. 96 and 0. 90). The effects of total pressure, oxygen partial pressure and injected oxygen flux were studied.
For the heavy gravity oil, the oxygen requirement at the front increases with the oxygen partial pressure, slighty at constant oxygen flux, more strongly at increasing oxygen flux.
For the medium gravity oil, the oxygen requirement at the front decreases when the oxygen partial pressure increases at constant oxygen flux, and increases with the oxygen flux.
Previous sweep with a mixture of N2/CO2 during combustion is conform to results of standard combustion experiments.
As far as phase 2 is concerned, effort and time were spent in assembling and commissioning a part of the equipment.
Tests experiments were run to prove the laboratory pilot.
In phase 3, for a thin heavy oil reservoir, it has been demonstrated that it would not be possible to use air in 6.25 ha (15.4 ac) inverted five-spot because of the air injectivity limitation. There is clearly technical advantage for oxygen in this case.
On the contrary, injection of oxygen instead of air is not recommended for waterflooded or steam stimulated shallow reservoirs.
Based on results for one inverted five-spot, scavenging of the oxygen fill-up behind the burn-front has been followed by waterflooding. By comparison with wet oxygen combustion, this technique may lead to higher recovery factors at slightly higher technical costs.
Regarding the examinated field developments, O2 wet combustion (simultaneous O2 and water injection) is definitely the most efficient process for deep heavy oil reservoirs.
This project consists of three phases :
PHASE 1 - STUDY OF COMBUSTION WITH OXYGEN
The work consists of comparing the conditions of propagation of combustion with oxygen and with air, and in determining the influence of the principle parameters governing combustion with oxygen so as to identify the technical domain in which the method could be applied.
PHASE 2 - STUDY ON AIR INJECTION IN AN ELABORATED MODEL
Simulation in the laboratory of combustion in reservoir conditions and a consolidated environment implies the creation of equipment unique in the world. All the developed technologies undergo routine tests to prove them before inclusion in the equipment. When the apparatus has been debugged, comparative tests are run between the standard models and the latter, to prove the apparatus, and provide indications as to its limitations and the feasibility of combustion in unusual conditions.
PHASE 3 - ECONOMIC ESTIMATION
The experimental results obtained during the tests would make itpossible to make an economic assessment of combustion in non-standard applications.
