Objective
To develop a total structural monitoring system for offshore platforms.
The results indicate that such a system cannot replace current underwater inspection and maintenance practice. No further applications of the system were made by IIRS. The main problem areas were:
- a lot of instrumentation is necessary (mostly underwater).
- the system is sensitive to deck load, marine growth, etc.
- maintenance and regular calibration of the system would be expensive. The project did not provide valuable feedback to iirs on safety levels inherent in the design of the kinsale jackets.
Accelerometers, a wave staff and a computer based data acquisition system were installed on kinsale alpha and the records were analysed to determine if the structural integrity of the platform could be monitored. A design safety factor assement was also considered.
