Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate that the implementation of a new, efficient and attractive GLT (Guided Light Transport) will also lead to the reduction of traffic in the City Centre through a model shift from the private car to public transport.
The attractivity and performance of the new transport system will be demonstrated on the basis of the specificities of the vehicle : - more affordable (30% cheaper than a classical LRT system)
- non-polluting and quiet (electric-traction)
- running on dedicated lanes (guided vehicle)
- running on rail (return of the current and esthetic view with only one cable catenary)
- great capacity (200 passengers)
- easy access (low floor)
- safe and rapid (guided on separate lanes)
- flexible to be easily and at low cost implemented in city centres.
- lower exploitation cost
As an integral and essential part of the newly applied transport system, the Guided Line Transport vehicle, which is low in cost and easy to install, will be tested in CAEN and in PORTO. As a bi-modal vehicle, the GLT will be equipped with :
- A guiding system ensuring a safe and swaddle contact with the embedded rail so that no derailment may occur and the passengers comfort appreciated.
- A retractable system ensuring the capability of being steered when driving off track.
- A dual mode hybrid traction, light and powerful allowing the vehicle to pick electricity from an overhead catenary when being on track and guided or out of track and unguided, and giving also to the vehicle the possibility of generating its own electricity by means of an onboard generator when no catenary is available.
Thus the system can be operated in four different ways (on a segregated lane, with catenary and guidance, on a segregated lane with diesel electric and guidance, off lane with catenary, off land with diesel electric generator).
The generator can be operated with diesel, diester fuel or other alternative for some major advantages compared to a classic thermal traction : reduction of energy consumption (constant approvisional rpm), increase of comfort (no jerks), less pollution, etc. The project will encourage the implementation of innovative intermediate transport system which will enlarge the public transport market in medium size European cities and which will offer the following concepts :
- perfectly good integration in city centres
- integration of this innovative system in the public transit network of each city while devoting a special attention to inter-modal interchanges with the existing facilities
- non polluting mode transit system
- lower cost in civil works, infrastructures and vehicles,
- lower cost in exploitation,
- increasing security,
- friendly and attractive,
- improving the quality of life in city centres
The project will also encourage a modal shift from car to public transport which will lead to significant energy saving and reduction of pollution :
- new global traffic scheme
- integrated strategy in connections and priorities.
