Objetivo The project aims at the development of alternative types of poultry compatible with the constraints of the stressful environmental and production conditions in the tropics and capable of survival and production under the prevailing conditions, through utilization of local poultry gene resources. The valuable characteristics of local gene resources with respect to adaptation, disease resistance Special product qualities etc will be combined with exotic high yielding breeding material to maximise productivity in the fragile environments complementing the characteristics of adaptation and Production. . The research work is based on the long term experience of the Institute of Animal production, Berlin, in the investigation and use of major genes for improving productive adaptability of layers in the tropics, expertise of prince Leopold institute of tropical veterinary medicine, Belgium in investigations of disease resistance and the experience and resources available in the partner institutes in the developing countries. Modern methods of molecular genetics would be utilised for precise evaluations and faster genetic gains. The project work would begin with the screening of local populations and identification of their special characteristics. The genetic distances between the populations and variability within the populations will be estimated through genomic markers. This would be followed by a search for major gene effects and genomic markers for the traits related to adaptability and disease resistance. The local populations will be evaluated for specific characteristics and for their performance; attempts will be made to improve their productivity through crossing with exotic high yielding populations. The project should result into development of genotypes most suitable for the conditions of the specific tropical regions in ecological and economical aspects. The project should strengthen co-operation among the institutions in the developing countries and Europe and the ability of the institutions in the developing countries for appropriate indigenous research technologies.
