UPGRADING OF LINEN.

Objective



THE STUDY CONCERNS FIVE ITEMS, AND CONCENTRATES ON BENEFITS RESULTING FROM IMPROVEMENTS IN THREE MAIN WORK SECTORS: RAW MATERIAL AND FIBRE EXTRACTION, FIBRE CONVERSION AND SPINNING, FINISHING AND QUALITY. SOME NEW TECHNIQUES FOR FIBRE PREPARATION, SPINNING AND FINISHING WILL BE STUDIED.

THE FIRST SUBJECT CONCERNS NATURAL IMPURITIES IN FLAX TOW AND THE WAYS IN WHICH THESE IMPURITIES CAN BE ELIMINATED. THE STUDY WILL BE CONCENTRATED ON THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS:
- IDENTIFICATION OF IMPURITIES,
- THEIR BEHAVIOUR DURING RETTING, HACKLING AND COMBING,
- QUALIFICATION OF RAW MATERIAL.

THE SECOND SUBJECT CONCERNS THE USE OF LOW-GRADE FLAX TOW FOR SPINNING INTO FINE YARNS. FOLLOWING ITEMS SHALL BE EXAMINED:
- INFLUENCE OF RAW MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS ON THEIR BEHAVIOUR DURING MECHAMICAL PREPARATION,
- DIFFERENT SPINNING AND PREPARATION SYSTEMS USING MECHANICALLY TREATED RAW MATERIAL,
- POSSIBLE END-USES FOR SUCH YARNS.

THE THIRD SUBJECT CONCERNS DREF-SPINNING. THIS FRICTION - SPINNING PROCESS WILL BE STUDIED TO OBTAIN FURTHER INFORMATION ON POSSIBLE END-USES FOR THIS TYPE OF YARN.
FOLLOWING ITEMS WILL BE EXAMINED:
- YARN FORMATION,
- CORE-YARNS,
- BLENDS,
- FANCY-YARNS.

THE FOURTH SUBJECT CONCERNS STAPLING OF FLAX. THIS PROGRAMME WILL BE CONCENTRATED ON THE STAPLING PROCESS, IN PARTICULAR THE POSSIBILITY OF OBTAINING A BETTER CONTRABLED FIBRE-LENGTH DISTRIBUTION BY:
- USING LUBRICANTS TO CHANGE THE FRICTION-COEFFICIENTS,
- MECHANICAL MODIFICATIONS OF THE STAPLING MACHINE.

THE LAST SUBJECT CONCERNS FINISHING. THE STUDY WILL CONCENTRATE ON UPHOLSTERY-FABRICS, AND THE WAYS IN WHICH FINISHING CAN CONTRIBUTE TO GIVE NEW PROPERTIES TO THESE FABRICS. THE FOLLOWING ITEMS WILL BE STUDIED:
- INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SUCCESSIVE TREATMENTS,
- INTERACTION BETWEEN YARN AND FABRIC CHARACTERISTICS AND FINISHING,
- INTERACTIONS BETWEEN FINISHING TECHNIQUES, CHEMICALS USED, RAW MATERIAL AND THE END-PRODUCT PROPERTIES,
- CRITICAL EXAMINATION CONCERNING WAYS BY WHICH NEW PROPERTIES CAN BE GIVEN TO UPHOLSTERY FABRICS.
