Objective
TO STUDY THE SOURCE AND METHODOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECLAMATION OF WASTE MATERIALS IN THE EEC TEXTILE INDUSTRY AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF CARDED WOOL FIBRE TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF YARN SPUN OF THE OPEN END SYSTEM.
1. THE MAIN THEME OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE A SURVEY OF THE METHODS AT PRESENT EMPLOYED FOR WASTE RECLAMTION IN APPROPRIATE INDUSTRIES IN THE EEC AND AN ASSESSMENT OF VARIATIONS IN THESE METHODS. POSSIBLE MODIFICATIONS TO METHODS IN THE LIGHT OF MATERIALS AVAILABLE WILL BE STUDIED AND, IN PARTICULAR, THE POSSIBLE UTILISATION AS AN ALTERNATIVE FEEDSTOCK FOR NEW SPINNING TECHNOLOGY. WITHIN THE TERM OF THE PROJECT, 3 MONTHS WILL BE SPENT VISITING EEC ESTABLISHMENTS. TO ENSURE ECONOMY IN EFFORT, THIS PROJECT WILL BE ORGANISED AND INTERGRATED AS FAR AS IS POSSIBLE WITH OTHER RESEARCH PROJECTS AT WIRA. THE PERIOD INVOLVED DURING THE FIRST 12 MONTHS WILL BE CONCERNED MAINLY WITH THE GATHERING OF INFORMATION AND SAMPLES. THE FINAL PERIOD OF THE PROJECT WILL BE AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE RESULTS AND ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION ON WHICH A REPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS WILL BE MADE.
2. THIS PROJECT WILL BE IN THREE DISTINCT BUT COMPLEMENTARY STAGES. FIRSTLY TO ESTABLISH THE EFFECT OF THE PROPERTIES OF RAW WOOL MATERIAL ON THE PROCESSING BEHAVIOUR AT CARDING AND SPINNING. A NUMBER OF SPECIFIC WOOL QUALITIES WILL BE SCOURED TO KNOWN LEVELS OF FATTY MATTER CONTENT AND DOSED WITH VARIOUS ADDITIVES PRIOR TO CARDING. THE FIBRE PARAMETERS UNDER INVESTIGATION IN THIS STAGE WILL BE: FIBRE LENGTH, DIAMETER, RESIDUAL GREASE CONTENT AND REGAIN.
IN THE SECOND STAGE THE EFFECT OF SPINNING MACHINE VARIABLES ON YARN QUALITY WILL BE STUDIED. THE CRITERIA FOR SPINNING PERFORMANCE AND YARN QUALITY WILL BE: END BREAKAGE RATE, YARN REGULARITY, TWIST, STRENGTH/EXTENSION AND YARN HAIRINESS. THE MACHINE VARIABLES TO BE STUDIED WILL INCLUDE TWIST AND SPEED TOGETHER WITH VARIOUS SELECTORS AND TOOTH PROFILES.
THE THIRD STAGE WILL INVESTIGATE THE SUITABILITY OF OPEN END YARNS SPUN WITHIN THIS PROJECT FOR VARIOUS END USES NAMELY BLANKETS, UPHOLSTERY AND TUFTED CARPETS.
