This research has investigated the requirements for digital maps or digital road databases (RDB) which are fundamental for future driver information and road transport informatics (RTI) systems. Work carried out has included: unifying activities in different areas such as road transportation, surveying, and the car and electronic industries; performing a benchmark test on a European digital road map (EDRM); exploring of data production including data exchange between public authorities and industries; carrying out the first full scale test of the draft standard Geographic Data File (GDF); developing techniques for efficient data acquisition and RDB maintenance; developing a European based data model enabling data exchange between the most important data structures in Europe including road maintenance databases. The research led to the following conclusions: data acquisition techniques have been adequately explored in terms of the logistics of data production; strategic partners from the public authorities and the private data production sector are essential for the maintenance of the database; legal and political constraints on access to public data sources remains a limitation; the standardization of kernel datastructures for exchange of data between national standards in different languages have to be developed.
