A continuation of Drive I (Cassiope Project), the EuroBus Project has the following objectives :
to define a European reference data model for public transport (Transmodel);
to design computer-aided tools for passenger information services (Popins).
The EuroBus project involves:
defining a European reference data model for public transport (Transmodel);
designing computer aided tools for passenger information services (Popins).
Transmodel was able to achieve the following work on data modelling:
comparison, integration of the Cassiope and OEPNV approaches, and issuing of a common glossary;
definition of a first draft data model on the core concepts of topology, routes, services;
launch of the work on driver scheduling, passenger information, personnel disposition, automatic vehicle monitoring and fare collection.
Draft data models are being devised on the 5 domains treated by the project. Further refinements will be searched in connection with the Phoebus test and other validations.
Popins realised the following work:
specification of the prototypes to be developed in Madrid, Marseille and Thessaloniki and development of some of the modules;
design and test of preliminary mock ups;
data collection necessary to generate a scheduling/city Geographical Information System (GIS) database;
set of recommendations for information universals (screen man machine interface (MMI) design such as icons, terminology, colours, etc).
Public transport operators now consider feasible and useful the development and implementation of computer-aided tools based on a common data base in their company (for such functions as scheduling, passenger information, fare collection, strategic planning, etc.). To assure the compatibility between applications developed within Europe, a reference data model describing the data structure used is necessary.
Two datamodels designed respectively in Drive I Cassiope (V 1019) and in the German OEPNV-Bison approach will be integrated in order to build a starting model for public transport applications. The resulting reference data model should be of a reasonable complexity and general enough to be able to be implemented on a DBMS or on an application software with limited adaptations. It should then become a "generic" solution for a pan-European architecture dedicated to public transport information systems, adopted by more and more operators and suppliers.
The EuroBus-Transmodel work will be validated through test implementation, mainly within the Drive II Phoebus project. Guidelines for enlarging the starting model, after having taken into account data structures of different software products and the results of the test, will be established.
This application area of EuroBus is to experiment a set of advanced computer aids for public transport passenger information, with field tests in three cities. The kind of tool considered concerns interactive street terminals and automated aids for information desks (e.g. telephone information center). The compatibility with audiotex or videotex servers and automated print-outs will be considered.
These tools will be designed in a comprehensive, modular, and advanced approach : they will address a set of common requirements, concepts, standards, guidelines matching passenger information needs; in each city, they will use a common transport database and a geographical information system (GIS) on public transport schedules and road network; the prototypes developed will take into account the more recent research results in the domains of man-machine interface, ergonomics, cooperative answering, knowledge-based systems.
Integrated information processing architecture for transport operators;
Common understanding of bus operations computerisation (Europe-wide glossary of terms);
Publishing and dissemination of an EC-Datamodel;
Compatibility of several software products with the EC-Datamodel.
Common Functional Specifications for interactive passenger information tools (street interactive terminal; workstation dedicated to computerised telephone information desks);
Assessment of a set of common requirements, concepts, standards, guidelines adapted to passenger information needs in European cities;
Use of geographical information systems (GIS) and transport or traffic data bases (DB), in line with the previous research done within Drive I;
Design and experimentation of different mock-ups, then prototypes, in the interested cities.
EuroBus-Transmodel will provide the bus industry with an integrated conceptual framework (data model, guidelines for implementation), adapted to information systems dealing with five priority domains (passenger information, fare collection, timetable planning and duty rostering, operations control system, and driver assignment). EuroBus-Popins will illustrate the specific case of passenger information, which can benefit from company data bases to address the issue of customised information. Both work areas will then contribute to defining and implementing the part of IRTE dedicated to public transport fleets.
