Objective
The overall aim the ASDSS project is to provide insight into the commercial realities of today's maritime industry, as a basis for policy making decisions. An investigation into overcapacity in the container markets and what drives it will be the cornerstone of the study and will provide the unifying context against which other relevant issues (such as the introduction of Post-Panamax tonnage, intermodal linkages, and strategic alliances) can be assessed.
The following specific objectives have been agreed on :
i) Assess the supply/demand situation in the container shipping markets, with particular emphasis on European routes, and provide an outlook for the future balances
ii) Assess the current competitive position on the European container shipping industry
iii) Review industry responses (e.g. capacity management, cost control, industry restructuring)
%
Secondary objectives are to examine linkages between the supply/demand situation in container shipping and : i) Social development, in particular flag selection and its effect on EU employement ii) Integration of transport modes : how does the choice of vessels influence port choice; what inland transport networks are required to efficently handle ever larger and potentially more concentrated inland flows ? iii) Linkages with related maritime industries, particularly port-related, agencies and forwarding,
