INSTALLATION OF 250 KW WIND TURBINE-HEAT PUMP-STORAGE SYSTEM IN CHIOS ISLAND

Objective

To install a 250 kW wind turbine and a heat pump in Aipos at Chios Greece, to substitute the energy comsumption for domestic heating and cooling. The combination is innovative and the control system especially designed for this system.

A system comprising a 250 kW wind turbine and heat pump storage tanks will be installed in order to obtain the highest amount possible of the cooling/heating of a tourist settlement and the heating of a greenhouse. The wind turbine is directly connected with the heat pump and parallel connected with the grid.
The combination of wind turbine, heat pump, ice bank/hot water tank, bungalows, greenhouse, grid is innovative. Another innovative part of the project is the microprocessor based control system which is constructed in order to implement the strategy for the optimization of the system's energy savings.
The wind turbine is Wind Master HMZ 250 kW/25 made in Belgium. It is a pitch control 3 bladed upwind machine with asynchronous generator and free yawing. An integrated gear system consisting of main shaft, main bearings, transmission, yaw systems, brake system and generator support, is built up as one compact factory made unit.
The heat pump is a reversible air-to-water electrically driven CARRIER heat pump manufactured in France. Its nominal cooling capacity is 53 to 314 kW and it provides high performance, dependable low cost cooling and heating for tourist settlements as well as easy installation. The heat pump is coupled with a hot water tank for the heating phase. Both tanks assure good energy management in the installation.
The total investment excluding the measurement phase is 81.500.000 Drs. The annual energy output is 708.000 kWh. The life of the plant is estimated to be 20 years. The total cost price per unit of generated energy has been estimated to 7.35 Drs/kWh, resulting to a payback time of approximately 8 years.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
