Objective
Large scale wind turbine of 1 MW, with a diameter of 45 m has been installed by the electricity company PEN at Wieringermeer near Medemblik, North Holland for grid electricity production, in order to investigate the yield and reliability of a large windturbine as well as to demonstrate the environmental aspects (integration in the landscape, number of birdstrikes) and the radio and TV disturbance caused by the windturbine.
The yearly energy production is estimated at 1,700,000 KWh.
The 1 MW wind turbine by Stork FDO-WES has been installed at Wieringermeer where an official opening took place on 11th of December 1985.
Various tests have been carried out in cooperation with ECN. The machine has passed successfully the security test according to NEN 6096.
From 01.01.87 up to 31.03.87 the machine produced about 435 MWh.
Among other tests, measurements on the electromagnetical disturbances caused by the wind turbine and noise measurements have been carried out.
Performance data
Period : 22/07/86 to 31/12/86 the WT generated 668 MWh
01/01/87 to 31/03/87 the WT generated 435 MWh.
March to August '88 the WT was not operational.
01/09/88 to 30/11/88 the WT generated 225 MWh.
STORK FDO the manufacturer of the machine ceased to trade WT during the project. As a pilot project, the first of this size in the Netherlands, it was not economically viable. The machine is still in production, and for the year of construction it can be considered as one of the most successful MW scale wind turbines. It is still used for collecting data on the behaviour of machines of this scale (Joule II programme).
The NEWECS - 45 wind turbine is a 1 MW machine with a diametre of 45 m and 60 m tower, manufactured by STORK-FDO. It has an upwind rotor with 2 variable pitch blades made of fiberglass reinforced polyester manufactured by POLYMARIN. Each blade has a length of 22 m weighs 2,500 Kg and is flexible in the flapwise direction. A parachute is integrated in each tip of the blade for extreme safety reasons.
In order to reduce the electrical power fluctuations with wind speed fluctuations, the machine operates at a variable rotor speed. To seperate the variable rotor speed from the fixed frequency grid, the turbine's synchronous generator is coupled to the grid by means of a rectifier/inverter system (AC-DC-AC).
The machine has been monitored for a period of 12 months in the framework of the NOW (national research programme on wind energy) and will be carried out by ECN (energy centre of the Nederlands). Besides the gathering of performance data (wind characteristics, energy output, etc.)the influence on the environment has also been investigated (noise, TV-interference, birdstrikes, etc.). The annual yield at the site where the annual mean wind velocity is 6 m/s, is estimated at 1,7 GWh leading to a cost of 37,8 ct/KWh while a conventional solution has a cost of 17,4 ct/KWh.
