Objective
To operate a 20 KW wind turbine in parallel with two diesel units of 20 KW and a battery storage of 110 V and 80 AH for the electricity supply of a small factory in Calabria (South Italy). To demonstrate the technical and economic attractiveness of an integrated wind-diesel system, optimized in order to increase the energy contribution from the wind. The annual power production was estimated at 17,000 KWh.
The wind turbine was installed in October 1986 along with the diesel unit. The whole system was in operation from that time up to June 1988. The WT produced about 1380 kWh whereas the diesel unit 390 kWh. A lot of experience has been gained on installing and operating wind-diesel units.
A 2 bladed 20 kW, 8.6 m diameter, downwind machine operates with a synchronous generator and will produce approx. 17 000 kWh per year of electricity. It is installed in Calabria at a place with a small local grid and where the mean annual windspeed is 5.5 m/s. It operates in parallel with two diesel engines of 2 x 20 KW and is connected with a battery bank and a storage device in order to increase the energy contribution from the wind and to demonstrate the technical and economic attractiveness of the system. The electricity will be used for conservation of polyester, pumping of water, lighting, space heating thereby facilitating the polymerization of polyester. The synchronous generator of the wind turbine is directly connected to the 110 V low voltage line. The frequency is regulated by a dump load with a max power of 20 kW. A battery store with a rectifier inverter system prevents too frequent starts and stops of the diesel engine. The battery storage of 110 V consists of 55 lead acid elements and has a capacity of 80 AH. A microprocessor control system manages the overall system and maximizes the energy contribution from the wind, by regulating the diesel operation in order to be complementary to the wind energy output and by ensuring the frequency regulation. The energy generated by the diesel engines goes up to 13,000 kWh annually and so the total energy production is 30,000 kWh. The cost per energy unit is estimated to 700 LIT while a conventional solution gives 785 LIT. Thus the payback time is estimated to 20 years.
