Objective
To build and demonstrate the reliable operation of a quiet, 3.5 MW windfarm in North Devon, England, with co-operation between the leading German wind turbine manufacturer, Enercon, and the UK's leading windfarm developer, National Wind Power.
To persuade the public that wind farms can be good neighbours and to persuade financiers that wind farms should not be treated as high risk investments.
The main aim of the project is to establish and demonstrate a 7 turbine, 3.5 MW wind farm on arable farm land close to the North Devon coast. The south-west of England experiences high average wind speeds, especially on elevated locations close to the coast such as Hore Down. Successful demonstration of a wind farm at Hore Down will facilitate the establishment of additional wind farms in the surrounding area.
The wind farm will comprise 7 Enercon 40 metre diameter, 500 kW rated turbines, interconnected by underground 11 kV cable and connecting into the 33 kV district distribution system via a 33/11 kV transformer and substation. The long term average wind speed at hub height, based on site measurements correlated with lon term Meteorological Office data from a nearby weather station, is calculated to be 7.5 m/s and the forecast energy output from the wind farm is 9,500 MWh per year, equivalent to the electricity provided by burning 4,000 tonnes of coal per year.
