Objective
Autonomous wind/diesel system of 25/50 kW for electricity supply at (ECN) Petten.
The innovation of the autonomous-wind diesel system consists in the fact that power is supplied in such a way that optimum use of wind-energy is made amongst others by switching on and off loads.
The diesel fuel savings achieved by this are estimated at 7 to 10 TOE/year.
One 10.6 m diameter, 25 KW wind turbine with a yearly production of 40 000 KWh works in parallel with a diesel generator set having a power output of 50 kW.
The wind turbine operates at variable speed and thus uses a rectifier/inverter system (ac-dc-ac).
According to the momentary occuring wind speed different operating conditions exist:
- no wind power available: the needed power is delivered by the diesel engines only.
- the needed power is greater than the momentary power delivered by the wind turbine: in this situation we have parallel operation of the wind turbine and the diesel engine. The frequency is controlled by the speed control of the diesel engine.
- the available wind power exceeds the power demand: the power is delivered by the wind turbine only.
In this situation the clutch between the synchronous generator to the diesel engine is disengaged so that the diesel engine can stop and his generator keeps rotating to keep the grid voltage at a constant level and to deliver the reactive power.
To maintain a constant frequency, the system uses load management and 50 kW extra controllable dump loads. It is estimated that by this system approx. 50% of the wind electricity can be used directly. The layout of the system gives flexibility concerning inter alia the number of windturbines or diesel generators.
