Dynamic Simulation model for analysing combined solar-biomass district heating plants

Objective

The objectives of the project are to develop design tools for analysing and projecting biomass district heating networks combined with central solar heating plants.
Especially TRNSYS design tools for a biomass boiler, a preisolated distribution pipe system and load profile models are adapted or new developed.
A TRNSYS deck will bei generated which contains the main system components like collector field, biomass boiler, distribution system, space heat load and domestic hot water preparation of an urban area.
This TRNSYS simulation deck will allow consulting engineers to make precise predictions for plant efficiencies, heat losses, solar gains and operational costs.
The simulation modell will allow technical and economical dimensioning of all system parts eg. collector area to storage volume ratio and to optimize existing combined plants.

The project was decided into four different phases

1. Project Definition

In this phase the work programme was refined and shared between the partners. Concentration of the the design tool development to CIT, STZ,and Transolar was decided.
System data , installation schemes and operational parameters of existing combined plants have been collected.

2. Design Tools, TRNSYS Deck

For describing exact behaviour of temperatures and heat losses in an district heating network a new TRNSYS - Type for a preisolated pipe system was writen. This Type takes seasonal fluctuations of surrounding earth temperature for the heat loss calculation into account.
A TRNSYS Deck which contains the main components like solar collector field, boiler, puffer-storage, distribution network, substation systems in the houses with corresponding heat loads will be generated in Part 2 of the work programme.
For exact load description a TRNSYS design tool for heat load was developed which takes different building insulation standards into account. Also passive solar and internal gains in dependence of different climate conditions are considered.
A new biomass boiler modul or an adapted gas boiler modul will be developed in the second part of the work programme.

3. System simulation

The system simulation will show the sensitivity of the parameters.
Especially influences of collector area, storage volume, different substation and distribution system, and controlling strategies will be investigated.

4. Evaluation and Documentation

After the simulations the results will be summerized and evaluated.
Planning criteria for dimensioning of collector area and puffer storage volume in dependence of district distribution systems and the load characteristics will be deducted.

Investion costs and recommendations to translate the result into real projects will finish the work programme
