Objective String Topology is a new field of research which combines several classical techniques of algebraic and geometric topology with the new ideas suggested by quantum field theory and string theory. It was opened to the mathematics community by a pioneering work of Chas and Sullivan in 1999, but it is developing rapidly in a number of directions. We propose an intensive study of this topic addressing the implication of String Topology on the understanding of the topology of the manifolds, with particular emphasis on three-dimensional manifolds. We will also develop the connections with the realm of quantum mathematics and the theory of knots. The methods that will be used in this project will come from many areas of mathematics: from the standards tools of algebraic topology to the more recent techniques inspired by physics such as Feynman diagrams and quantization. The theory of Operads, namely the theory of the algebraic structures of some space, will also have an important role in the project.
