SELECTION OF ALUMINA RAW MATERIALS FOR HIGH-STRENGTH, HIGH-TENSION PORCELAIN.

Objective

THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF HIGH-STRENGTH, HIGH-TENSION INSULATORS FROM ALUMINA RAW MATERIALS WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION BEING PAID TO THE INFLUENCE OF MICROSTRUCTURE, BULK PREPARATION AND PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES.

SEVERAL COMMERCIAL ALUMINA MATERIALS WILL BE OPTIMISED SO AS TO PRODUCE DENSE, HIGH-STRENGTH MATERIALS. THESE WILL BE FABRICATED BOTH IN THE LABORATORY AND IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION CONDITIONS. THE COMPOSITIONS WILL BE CHARACTERIZED AS TO THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, MINERALOGICAL PHASES AND IN THEIR MACHINABILITY BY MEASUREMENTS OF THE PFEFFERKORN AND HENNICKE TYPE (HYSTERESIS METHOD BY REAL SHEAR). THE EFFECTS OF THERMAL SHRINKAGE REACTION WILL BE FOLLOWED BY APPLICATION OF A NEWLY DEVELOPED LASER-DIALOTOMETER METHOD WITH NO CONTACT TO THE SPECIMEN.
BULK PREPARATION WILL ALSO BE EXAMINED BY A DRY PROCESS, WITHOUT SPRAY-DRYING, FOR ISOSTATIC PRESSING UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS. THE FIRING-RATE ESPECIALLY WILL BE OBSERVED FOR THESE MATERIALS BECAUSE OF THEIR HIGHER GREEN-DENSITY.
THE FIRED SPECIMENS WILL BE TESTED UNDER TENSILE CONDITIONS FOR THEIR STRENGTH, DYNAMIC ELASTIC MODULUS, ULTRA SONIC INTERNAL FRICTION AND DAMPING CAPACITY. THE PHASE COMPOSITION WILL BE CONTROLLED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION TETS. LIGHT MICROSCOPY AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY WILL BE USED FOR MICROSTRUCTURE CONTROL. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF CLOSED PORES.
DURING 1983 AND 1984, THE PRODUCTION OF 12 DIFFERENT COMPOSITIONS PER YEAR WILL BE MADE (5KG OF MATERIAL) AND 5 PILOT-TRIALS IN A PRODUCTION PLANT FACILITY (100KG). IN 1985, THE PILOT TRIALS WILL BE REPLACED BY 2 INDUSTRIAL RUNS (2 TONS), AND THE SUITABILITY FOR INSULATORS OF THE LONG ROD TYPE WILL BE EXAMINED.

THE LABORATORIUM DER FA. RHEINISCH-WESTFAELISCHE ISOLATORENWERKE SIEGBURG (FRG) WILL COLLABORATE IN VARIOUS PHASES OF THIS PROJECT.
