NOVEL AND ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS FOR PRODUCTION OF DIES AND PRODUCTS WITHIN THE FIELD OF IRON, STEEL AND NON-FERROUS METAL MANUFACTURING.

Objective

TO DEVELOP FIBRE-REINFORCED HIGH STRENGH AND HIGH DENSITY CEMENT FOR DIES AND METAL-CERAMIC AND COMPOSITE MATERIALS FOR COMPONENTS EXPOSED TO WEAR.

FIBRE-REINFORCED HIGH STRENGTH/HIGH DENSITY CEMENT MAY BE EXPECTED TO REPLACE FAR MORE COSTLY MATERIALS USED WITHIN IRON, STEEL, AND NON-FERROUS MANUFACTURING IN CASES WHERE THE PRIMARY DEMANDS ARE WEAR RESISTANCE AND COMPRESSION STRENGTH.

THE FIRST PROJECT CONSIST OF EXPERIMENTS PRIMARILY BASED ON MIXTURES OF HYDRAULIC CEMENT AND ULTRA-FINE INORGANIC PARTICLES COMBINED WITH CHOPPED FIBRES SUCH AS KEVLAR, STEEL FIBRES, CERAMIC FIBRES OR CARBON FIBRES.
SPECIAL PROCESSES FOR FIBRE ADMIXTURE AND FOR CASTING WILL BE DEVELOPED.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE STRENGTH AND WEAR RESISTANCE OF THE RESULTING MATERIALS BY THE ADDITION OF ADDITIVES SUCH AS AL2O3 AND SIC WILL ALSO BE STUDIED.

THE SECOND PROJECT WILL INVOLVE THE PRODUCTION AND ANALYSIS OF A VARIETY OF METAL-CERAMIC AND COMPOSITE MATERIALS USING POWDER TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESSES.
SUCH COMBINATIONS AS FE-C WITH AL2O3 AND SIC WILL ALSO BE STUDIED.

THE SECOND PROJECT WILL INVOLVE THE PRODUCTION AND ANALYSIS OF A VARIETY OF METAL-CERAMIC AND COMPOSITE MATERIALS USING POWDER TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESSES.
SUCH COMBINATIONS AS FE-C WITH AL2O3; FEB; SILICA;WILL BE USED WHERE THE FREQUENTLY USED CR; W; V; CARBIDES ARE REPLACED BY LESS STRATEGICALLY IMPORTANT AND CHEAPER CERAMIC MATERIALS.

EXAMINATION OF POTENTIAL COMBINATIONS BY PHASE EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAMS AND INVESTIGATION OF THE OPTIMUM GRAIN DISTRITION IN METALS AND CERAMICS; ADMIXTURE TECHNIQUES; ISOSTATIC PRESSING INCLUDING DEMONSTRATION OF THE OPTIMUM PRESSURE; SISTERING INCLUDING OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE, TIME AND ATMOSPHERE, AND LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS OF STRENGTH VALUES, COMPOSITION, WEAR, WILL ALL BE INVESTIGATED TO OBTAIN OPTIMIZED MATERIALS.

THE DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGY, RISO NATIONAL LABORATORY (DENMARK) AND THE INSTITUTE OF METALLURGY OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK (DENMARK) WILL BOTH COLLABORATE IN THIS PROJECT.
