RECYCLING OF ALUMINIUM FROM METAL SCRAP BY RAPID SOLIDIFICATION PROCESSING

Objective

PRODUCTION OF WROUGHT (HALF-) PRODUCTS OBTAINED FROM OLD ALUMINIUM SCRAP USING RAPID SOLIDIFICATION CASTING TECHNIQUES.

RAPID SOLIDIFICATION HAS DEVELOPED IN JUST TWO DECADES FROM AN INSIGNIFICANT SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY INTO A REALISTIC PRODUCTION TECHNIQUE TODAY. THE APPLICATION OF THE METALLIC GLASSES (AMORPHOUS ALLOYS WITH OUTSTANDING SOFT MAGNETIC BEHAVIOUR) IS PERHAPS THE MOST WELL-KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THE CHANGE OF PROPERTIES DUE TO COOLING-RATES IN THE RANGE OF 1O5-1O8OC/S. ANOTHER PARTICULAR FEATURE OBSERVED IN MICROCRYSTALLINE ALLOYS (NEARLY ALL COMMERCIAL ALLOYS REMAIN CRYSTALLINE) IS THE MUCH MORE UNIFORM AND EXTREMELY REFINED SOLIDIFICATION MICROSTRUCTURE. THE ENORMOUS REFINEMENT OF SECOND PHASE CONSTITUENT PARTICLES LEADS, ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF ALUMINIUM ALLOYS, TO IMPROVEMENT OF SUCH MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AS DUCTILITY, FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AND FATIGUE LIFE-TIME. IT IS ALREADY DEMONSTRATED THAT EVEN USING HIGHLY ALLOYED "OLD" ALUMINIUM SCRAP, AFTER R.S.P. GOOD MECHANICAL PROPERTIES ARE OBTAINED.

THE AIM OF THE PRESENT WORK IS TO INVESTIGATE THE INFLUENCE OF PROCESSING CONDITIONS AND ALLOYING CHEMISTRY OF STARTING MATERIAL ON MICROSTRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES. THE RAPID SOLIDIFICATION TECHNIQUE USED WILL BE MELT-SPINNING WHICH IS EXTENSIVELY STUDIED AT THE DEPARTMENT OF METALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. CONSOLIDATION OF THE OBTAINED RAPIDLY SOLIDIFIED RIBBON MATERIAL IS PERFORMED IN FIRST INSTANCE BY COLD PRESSING FOLLOWED BY HOT EXTRUSION. THE PRECIPITATION BEHAVIOUR DURING THERMAL TREATMENT WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY MICROSTRUCTURAL ANALYSES. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF THE CONSOLIDATED MATERIAL WILL BE TESTED AND RELATED TO THE STRUCTURAL EXAMINATIONS.
ALLOYING CHEMISTRY WILL BE RELATED WITH THE COMPOSITIONS OF EXISTING SCRAP STREAMS IN CO-OPERATION WITH A STUDY CONCERNING SEPARATION TECHNIQUES UNDERTAKEN BY THE DEPARTEMENT OF MINERAL TECHNOLOGY OF THE DELFT UNIVERSITY.
