FULL-SCALE AND LABORATORY TESTS APPROACH TO H2S ENVIRONMENTAL FRACTURE OF PIPELINE STEELS AND WELDS.

Objective

GAS PIPELINES ARE REPORTED TO UNDERGO OCCASIONAL FAILURES IN WET H2S (ACID) ENVIRONMENTS.
THE RISK OF FAILURES IN THESE ENVIRONMENTS ARISES BECAUSE OF LOCAL CONDENSED WATER SOLUTIONS, WHERE CORROSIVE REACTIONS TAKE PLACE AND CONSEQUENTLY, HYDROGEN ENTRY INTO THE METAL IS MADE POSSIBLE.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS RESEARCH CONSIST OF THE COMPARISON BETWEEN RESULTS FROM DIFFERENT LABORATORY TESTS AND FULL SCALE TESTS ON BIG INCH LINE PIPES (24'') UNDER ACID GAS (H2S) CONDITIONS.

THE MAIN TEST VARIABLES ARE STEEL GRADES BETWEEN X52 AND X70, CONTAINING GIRTH WELDS OF DIFFERENT HARDNESSES. FURTHERMORE THESE PIPES COME FROM STEELS WHICH ARE HIC-RESISTANT RESP. NON-RESISTANT.

THE CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENT CONSISTS OF AQUEOUS SOLUTION, SATURATED WITH H2S (1 BAR), PH = 2,7-3,5 TEMPERATURE 20-25 CELSIUS DEGREES. THE PIPES ARE STRESSED TO 80% SMYS FOR A TEST TIME OF MAXIMUM 4 MONTHS. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THESE PIPES HAS TO BE COMPARED WITH LABORATORY TEST RESULTS ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT STANDARDS, USING THE SAME ENVIRONMENT. THE PROJECT IS A JOINT RESEARCH OF SEVERAL EUROPEAN PIPE MANUFACTURES, GAS TRANSMISSION COMPANIES AND RESEARCH INSTITUTES (EPRG).
