Objective To demonstrate the feasibility of the dry slag granulation process based on laboratory testwork by british steel in the granulation of molten blast furnace slag for cement making. Traditionnally the liquid slag stream from the blast furnace is atomised by high pressure water jets. The proposed dry process employs a high speed rotating cup which spreads the slag outwards in a thin film which then breaks down and forms spherical granules. After cooling in the same unit the granules are suitable for direct use.The design of the rotating cup assembly is complete. The design parameters of the granulator are now sufficiently understood to enable rapid progress as soon as the agreement is reached on the site for the demonstration plant. The use of a dry slag granulation process to produce granulated slag suitable for cement manufacture from liquid slag delivered from a blast furnace.
