DEMONSTRATION OF SOLAR WALLS TO PROVIDE SPACE HEATING IN SCHOOLS

Objetivo

To demonstrate the fuel saving potential, reliability, low maintenance requirements and performance of a "modular solar energy collector" installation and thus achieving a realistic database upon which detailed analysis of long-term economic viability may be assessed.
The "modular intelligent passive air-heating solar energy collectors" will be retro-fitted into a standard aluminium re-cladding system - to be installed at the County Primary School, Nazeing, Essex.

133 m2 of vertical solar walls will be installed during the re-cladding of an existing school building. This comprises 24% of the total area to be recladed. Of the total solar wall area, 53 m2 will be on the eastside, 43 m2 will be on the southside and 37 m2 on the westside. The prefabricated solar walls elements are thermosyphonic air-heating solar energy collectors with negligible internal storage. On average they will supply 500 MJ/m2 (140 kWh/m2) of useful heat per year.
In addition the solar wall with its improved level of thermal insulation (in comparison with conventional wall elements) will reduce energy losses by 600 MJ/m2 per year.
It is envisaged that during summer months the solar wall will ventilate the classroom in a controlled manner thus maintaining a comfortable internal environment without the need for manual adjustement of window openings or ventilating louvres.
