BIOGAS AND COMPOST PRODUCING WASTE TREATMENT PLANT

Objective

To demonstrate the production of biogas from biodegradable organic household waste in a more environmentally acceptable way than that of incineration. Also to demonstrate a cost effective technique for treatment of organic waste and finally to demonstrate the use of biogas for district heatinq.

1. 3 hydropulpers will transform the mixture of organic waste and recirculated process water into a pumpable mixture of app. 10% TS. The thermochemical treatment process will further degrade the fibrous solids. The hydrolysis process step will produce fatty acids for the anaerobic filter.
2. The outflow from the hydrolysis process is separated in a liquid and a solid fraction. The liquid (fatty acids) is digested in an anaerobic fixed filter, producing biogas. The solids are used as soil ameliorator. The biogas is initially utilized for district heating, but eventually it will be utilized for CHP in an adjacent CHP-plant to be erected in 1993.
3. It has been calculated that the BCW plant may treat organic waste at a cost of 114 DKK per ton compared to 285 DKK per ton for an incineration plant of the same capacity. The production cost of energy (methane) is calculated to : 59, 3 3 DKK/GJ .
