Multimedia Dataprocessing by Satellite in Europe

Objective

The envisaged project consists in connecting a network of public information points with a system distributing data by satellite. This enables an interactivity not only of relatively fixed data stocked on hard disk or CD-ROM, but also that of data susceptible to changes which necessitate regular updating.

CEDICOM, a French company specialised in methods of distributing data by satellite, and INFOCO, a Spanish company working in the interactive multimedia field, propose to collaborate for the development of a multimedia application on the theme of tourism and knowledge of Europe. The information available on the terminals could include data and tourist highlights about a region (activities, sights to visit, accommodation, etc) as well as topical information (artistic and cultural events, festivals, concerts, etc), updated as necessary by satellite. The management of events aspect also enables the system to have refreshed information throughout the whole of the terminal network of a nature likely to interest the general public, whilst avoiding the boredom associated with static applications. The system could be generalized to suit other applications or themes using the same techniques.
